Ascorbic acid
Indications/Uses
Ascorbic acid deficiency if PO is contraindicated.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV/IM/SC Adult 100-200 mg, 1-2 times daily for several days. 1,000-2,000 mg IM or slow IV inj daily may be given in severe cases.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Increased levels of oxalic acid in the urine & possible deposition of Ca oxalate in the kidneys & 'sickle cell' crisis in large doses. Patients w/ hemochromatosis, thalassemia, polycythemia, leukemia, or sideroblastic anemia; G6PD deficiency due to hemolysis. Pain & thrombophlebitis (rare). Patients w/ impaired kidney function &/or history of kidney stones.
Adverse Reactions
Tiredness, headache, insomnia, hot flushes, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps. Temporary pain & swelling at inj site (IM/SC), dizziness & fainting (rapid IV), diarrhea (large doses), diuretic (>600 mg).
Drug Interactions
Anticoagulant, aspirins, barbiturates, OCs.
